Photography Blog | The Life and Times of Julie Harris Photo Blog | Photography Blogs. Welcome! This is where I show my work and write about what stirs me. Mary Ellen Mark says, "Reality is always extraordinary". I live by this. I'm a documentary photographer with a thirst for love, life and truth... a true bohemian at heart. In an industry saturated with trendy processing techniques and emphasis on style instead of substance, I strive to make honest images that are full of emotion and reality. I honestly can’t think of a more beautiful day in the life of portrait session. Danielle asked if I could do some portraits of her and her baby girl, skin to skin. She wanted to capture this fleeting time between her and her 5 month old daughter, breastfeeding, bathing, snuggling… It was so precious. So natural. So perfect. I absolutely love these images and was honored to be able to snap a few shots of these intimate rituals between Danielle and baby Ava.

Every photographer has a horror story or two—some which we may laugh about later, some which we wish to never think about again. But I may have one that tops them all—and is seriously one of the funniest things that has yet to happen to me on a shoot.
And the story goes… Laura was planning on doing a tasteful boudoir session for her boyfriend, Steve. We had met a few weeks back to discuss exactly what she had in mind and set the date to do the shoot at her place. Long story short, we were nearing the end of the shoot (Laura perched on the bed on all fours in black lace), when I heard the front door open… It was Steve!!! And the horror of the story, is that when he walked in all he could hear was two women’s panicked voices, and all he could see was Laura in her pose on the bed in lingerie. Mind you, there was also a bottle of wine out on the counter in the kitchen (I always bring a bottle of wine when shooting a boudoir to take the edge off ), and there were multiple pieces of lingerie strewn across the floor of the apartment. Steve was naturally horrified, thinking that his girlfriend was either having some lesbian affair, or that she had some secret life as a porn star. Anyhow, the suprise was no more. Laura chased after him and explained everything to him as I quickly gathered my equipment and scurried out. What is so strange about the whole thing, is that I actually felt like I was doing something wrong—simply because it looked so scandalous! Hee hee! Oh my gosh, I’m still laughing as I write this!!! Oh well. Steve will have to settle for getting an early Christmas present because we showed him some of the shots on the back of my camera just so he knew I was a legit photographer. He was still completely in shock and unable to laugh about the situation when I left, but I’m hoping that when he recieves the beautiful images of Laura, he’ll not only treasure them, but he will be able to laugh about the whole thing!
