Oh my—another beautiful family that has made me once again reconsider the idea of child bearing…. I could handle toting along a little Oliver, for sure. He is the sweetest thing—so full of life, and his expressions are priceless. To top it off, he loves wearing sunglasses and strumming his dad’s guitar—this hipster may be a future rock star!
What can I say about Krissy and Andy that these images don’t show? They are probably the most fun loving couple I have ever worked with— seriously. Just take a look at their wedding party. It doesn’t surprise me that they each had 10 attendants, simply because I bet these two have so many friends, that they don’t even know what to do with them all–except party, of course! This was a couple that when I walked away from their wedding, I thought to myself, “I really want to be friends with these cats”! The reception was a riot and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a catering staff or venue coordinator so flustered by such a party! At one point, I even saw a book on fire!…. I don’t know what that was about.
Aside from the best party of the summer, Krissy and Andy also had a lovely, very intimate and well thought out ceremony that really catered to their personalities. Krissy, being catholic and Andy Jewish, they integrated traditions and proverbs that suited their union as two unique souls. I was very moved….
How rad is Krissy? I loved this Veil! There are only so many brides that could pull this off—Krissy was certainly one of them!
… and check out the shoes!
You’ve gotta love the Hora—it’s not always the easiest thing to photograph, but when you do get a shot—there is always drama and excitement!
Between the nine weddings that I have this month and the 15 smaller shoots, I decided that a family reunion in Arkansas would be a nice thing to do…. And actually aside from the 108 temperatures and the very bumpy plane ride home, the trip was a nice culmination of both rest and relaxation and more time getting to know my family. I did a blog post about a month ago about my immediate family and our Harris harvest. This post is about the other side of my family—my mother’s side, and her 93 year old mother’s side— The Thomas/Norton 2008 family reunion in Petit Jean State park, Arkansas.
I have to say that I spent the majority of the time at this family reunion, hanging out with a couple of cousins and my two brothers. I’m not one for crowds, and I value intimacy and real conversations over small talk and playing 10 year catch up. While I love all of these people dearly, it really boiled down to how I wanted to use my time while I was out there (which was only 2 full days), and for the time that I wasn’t working on post production, I really wanted to get to know my cousin Hillary, her boyfriend Rob, my little cousin Jordan and of course spend more time with Robbie and Mark, my two brothers. While I would have cherished some time with my grammy, I wasn’t able to get her alone very often, and she wasn’t feeling well, so I didn’t see much of her. That is my one regret about the trip….
The images that I chose to post are ones that portray a mix of the emotions I felt out there, and the ways that I viewed my family. There are also some juxtaposing images of Arkansas—some very naturesque, the others represent the “other side of Arkansas” and the way I expected to see the land.
On the first morning of the reunion, we did a group hike down to the falls at Petit Jean State Park. It was gorgeous and quite refreshing. It was about a 2 mile hike down to the bottom of the canyon, where there was the most beautiful waterfall and still pool of water. I couldn’t believe I was in Arkansas, and felt like I had stepped into the movie, “Last of the Mohicans”. With the 108 degree heat, this was probably the best place in the state to be….it was a good 15 degrees cooler at the bottom of the canyon.
This is my cousin Sam.
I’m sad to say, that I don’t know who this is…. My Grandma’s sister passed away last year, and they combined her family reunion with ours this year. So, technically this is a second or third cousin… or something like that??? The son of my mother’s cousin. You catch my drift. None the less, I loved “his look”.
This is my cousin Hillary and her boyfriend Rob. I spent a lot of time with them, which was great. We had our own little “happy hours”, before dinner and of course after dinner at my cabin every evening. I really felt like I got to know the two of them better, and hope to spend much more time with them in the future….
… and of course my two brothers, Robbie and Mark, who always make for good photo content.
This image looks pretty droll, but check out the bottom left of the photo. I had to give some perspective to this canyon….
Again, another 2nd or 3rd cousin….
This is my cousin, Jordan. Sam’s older brother. Jordan joined us for happy hour every night (of course he didn’t partake as he isn’t 21). It was such a nice surprise to see how mature and insightful he is. I was really glad I got to spend some quality time getting to know him. He is an amazing pianist and graced us with some of his own original compositions at our family “talent show”.
I’m always drawn to those on the “edge”. These bikers were, quite literally on the edge of the trail and up a ways… I hiked up to talk to them and grab a portrait or two. A waterfall at the bottom of the canyon was really the last place I thought I would see some authentic southern Hell’s angels, but I guess they wanted to cool off, too!
…not sure who this is.
It was so hot after our hike, that I actually jumped in the pool with all of my clothes on…. I didn’t even have the energy to go back to the cabin to put a suit on. These next two images were actually taken much later in the day, but I loved the light, so I thought I’d post them.
My mother is one of 5 kids born to Harold and Roxie Thomas. Harold, my grandfather passed away a couple of years ago, but this is an image of the original Thomas family. My mom is the baby in the flowered shirt. The Thomas family is Welsh, and apparently, it’s a tradition to sing together and tell stories through song. Our family (the Thomas’s) do this together all the time. This image is of them singing the “orchestra song”, which involves something like 8 part harmony… I’m always with the clarinets.
The Thomas’s are also a very spiritual family. My grandfather was a pastor of the Church of Christ for his entire adult life. It’s norm for the family to get together every night for Christian devotionals. I snapped this image of my aunt, Rosemary worshiping the lord. I really think if there is one image that would sum up the vibe of the “thomas family reunions”, this might be it.
I loved this moment between my cousins, Erin and Hillary, and my Grammy.
Ok, so totally off in the other direction from family devotionals…..
I am a huge, huge David Lynch fan. I saw this site in the woods, and it screamed “David Lynch”. Strange, and beautiful all at once. I think that some brilliant person set up this sheet and a bright light in the woods to attract all the bugs away from the rest of the camp, but I don’t know. I just like the way it looked out there in the woods.
The light also created some cool effects for more portraits of Robbie.
Petit Jean was a surprise. I never imaged such a beautiful Arkansas. These images below, however are more of what I expected to see along the side of the road…. These were taken on the road from Little Rock to Morrilton.
Christina and Tyler are such a wonderful, unique, breath of fresh air couple…. Christina is about as fiery as her red hair, but sweet as they come, and Tyler is simply a riot. They are both fun loving and super laid back (they both walked down the aisle in flip flops). Their wedding was a hollarin’ celebration spent with many people who clearly love them dearly. I shot Kerri’s wedding (the sister of the bride) about two years ago, so I actually felt like part of their “inner-circle” which is always a perk…. They welcomed me in to partake of their celebrations and showed me a great evening of laughter and dancing at the Tapestry house in Fort Collins. Congratulations, Christina and Tyler!
I thought this image was so humorous, but it also shows the sweetness of Christina… Apparently an old friend rang her on her cell phone, right as Christina was about to put her dress on. Instead of Christina turning the phone off or handing it to a bridesmaid , she actually humored her friend and probably spent a good five minutes on the phone with her (As if she didn’t have anything better to do)! That’s just the kind of person Christina shows herself to be–it’s no matter that she was about to get dressed for her wedding day, a friend was calling, and she answered.
This image is very simple, but I love Christina’s mother doting on her in the background.
Instead of registering for gifts, Christina and Tyler asked that guest make a contribution to the human society—-super cool!
…and it’s always good to know that there are still smokers out there. I love this shot!
Kristen and Steve had the most romantic ceremony, straight out of Robin Hood or some other whimsical fairytale. The ceremony took place in the woods at 11am on a Sunday morning. There was singing, communion and beautiful, heartbreaking vows…. There was even a bagpiper! I couldn’t have dreamed up a better wedding for Kristi—it was simply perfect.
Kristi’s gown and hair was like a woodland fairy…. a little bohemian, and a little whimsical.
Kristen and Steve chose to see each other before the ceremony. I think this is such a lovely and intimate way for a bride and groom to “decompress” and prepare for the rest of the days events. It also makes for the most beautiful and emotional imagery.
I loved this moment between Steve and his mother.
I’m pretty sure that this kiss takes the cake for the most passionate of ceremony kisses!
I’m not really sure what was going on here, but I have a new picture for the “outtakes”! Everybody’s expression in the image is priceless… I’ll have to get the info on this one later!
What would we do if we could not find inspiration? What if one day we woke up and thought, “I am the best at everything I do. I have mastered my art. There is nobody better than me and I am amazing.” Sounds like arrogance at first, but after a second’s thought, just really tragic and sad. What if there were no muse? What if we stopped learning?? This is the topic on my mind tonight, after stalking a few blogs and needing two wiskeys to dull my jealousy to a point of being able to function….
And Here is my epiphany: I’d be stunted without inspiration. I don’t think I’d be able to make it to some weddings without looking at somebody like Sean Flanigan for a glimmer of hope that a cake shot can actually transcend wedding photography. So why do I wallow in my envy, instead of doing what I used to love to do—look at, and be inspired by, Art…. Because the day we have “arrived” and are the “best around”, is the day that we have died as an artist. We can no longer grow at that point. The world does not stop moving for artists who have become the best—there is always a better on the horizon.
So I thought I’d share with you a few people who are spicing it up, blowing my mind and who I’m losing sleep over—

So much of a “successful shoot” has to do with the enthusiasm of my subjects. Ashley was amazing! She is thrilled about being pregnant and was super excited to capture this time in her life. And it doesn’t hurt that she is drop dead gorgeous—seriously! If I knew that I would look this good as a pregnant woman, I would want to be having babies today…
But really—I had a blast with Matt and Ashley making these images because this couple was everything that I could have hoped they would be—in love, excited about their future, and simply glowing! I can’t wait until our next session with their newborn…
Will you look at this gigormous bowl of ice cream?? Ashley swears by CostCo’s brand vanilla ice cream with Hershey’s chocolate syrup. She makes it look pretty good!
Meet little Landon Dillman. He’s only about a week old in these images! I thought it was so great that Shami and Dan contacted me so shorty after Landon was born to truly capture this tiny little baby boy. It won’t be long until he grows into all that skin…. but what a wonderful time and phase to capture forever.
I love this eye contact between Dan and Landon…..
Look at all this loose skin! Landon hasn’t even grown into it yet, but rest assured—-he ate twice in the hour that I was there. He certainly doesn’t lack an appetite!
…Landon is the very first grandchild for both Shami’s and Dan’s parents. Needless to say, Landon is getting tons of attention. I had to get a shot of Landon with his grammy!
Generally, I am working my tail off on Sundays…. which may precisely be the reason why I long for a good ole’ fashioned sabbath. It seems every time I have to work on a Sunday, I start whining to Jesse about how lucky he is, and how, if I had the day off, I’d be doing….. blah dee blah, etc, etc…. So today, I sat down for a minute or 10, and tried to think about what I really would do if I had the Sunday off. Of course it really depends on what time of year it is, so I’ll keep it to a summer Sunday. (This may be my most boring post ever, but humor me, I’m dreaming)!
If I had a summer Sunday off, I would sleep in until 11am. (Jesse sleeps in until 12 or 1, so I’d have the morning to myself). I’d make a strong, steaming pot of french press coffee when I’d wake up and sit out by my fountain to enjoy the morning caffeine. I’d then read for about an hour( depending on the heat, I’d do it in my hammock, but since it’s been 90+degrees in Denver lately, I’d sit in the shade). Right now I’m reading “The fool’s Progress” by Edward Abby which is very good.
After that, I would head to duo or the Berkshire for bottomless mimosas. I’d get a little buzzed, come home and take a nap, and then a shower where I would exfoliate with my favorite Aveda Caribbean salt scrub, shave my legs, do an extra conditioning treatment on my hair and then sit around in my robe for awhile. To avoid getting lured in my computer, I would then take the dogs for a walk to the farmers market where I would buy a bunch of fresh veggies and herbs for cooking an amazing dinner. I’d of course pick up a bottle of wine, since we can now purchase alcohol on Sundays—probably a Portuguese red. After dinner, I’d sit out by the fountain again with Jesse and talk politics, religion and traveling (I’m still trying to get Jesse across the Atlantic). Then, when we’d have nothing more to argue about, we’d retire to veg in front of the tube. I’d either watch a series on HBO, or a good David Lynch movie. I’d take a bath (because you really can’t get enough water therapy these days), and go to bed in 500 thread count linen sheets—preferably just laundered and white.
However, I did work today, so I’ll have to do this another Sunday. Until then, enjoy the shots!
Aside from the harsh 10am morning light, my shoot with the Baker family was a walk in the park, so to speak. It’s been about two years since I’ve worked with Amy and Chris, but I was so excited when Amy called to say there was a new addition to the family, and that they would like me to come take some more pictures. Amy and Chris are a super chill couple, and they eally appreciate the art of documentation. They rarely even look up at the camera (with the exception of Kenedy, who is a total ham) and trust me to capture their lives. I love this about them! And because they give me so much freedom to do my thing, these images are straight from my heart. What a beautiful family!
This is baby #2 for the Sperry’s, and if the new baby is anything like little Elora, they will have their hands full! Elora is a bundle of energy and fun, and although she kinda understands what’s going on in the belly of her mom, she seems to care more about her monkey, bear, and being a star for the camera. It was a great shoot. Everybody was relaxed and just did their “family thing”, allowing me to authentically document their lives.
Can’t wait to meet the new addition…
I know that I am probably posting way too many images here, but I seriously couldn’t narrow these down—in fact, I think this may be my new feature wedding. I loved everything about this day—the ceremony, the ceremony site, Lauren’s dress, her hair, the music, the getaway car, and of course Lauren and Sean themselves. What a great pair! I really connected with these two and loved their vibe. Everything seemed calm and kismet with them. We had a good chunk of time after the ceremony to drive around in this great vintage caddy, and walk around in the woods. No pressure, no posing. It was exactly what I needed 1/2 way through my summer season—a refreshment. Congratulations you two! Can’t wait to party with you at your premier!
One of the most important shots of a wedding day is when the bride’s father sees her for the first time—this can sometimes be more emotional than the groom seeing the her for the first time—or just completely different. I love this shot of Lauren’s father, Bill as he walks in to her dressing room—he is stunned… and check out her sister’s expressions, too!
Lauren and Sean recessed down the aisle to one of my all time favorite tunes: “If you want to sing out, sing out!” by Cat Stevens.
I thought the wedding party was such a striking crowd—I was especially drawn to him.
Maybe it was because I was listening to Angelo Badlamente on the way up to Keystone, but this shot looks like something straight out of Twin Peaks…
…my favorite shot of the day.
I stole this shot from a distance away of Lauren and Sean practicing their first dance right before they were introduced. I thought it was very intimate.
Out of all the grooms who I’d expect to smash cake in their bride’s face, I never in a million years dreamed it would be Sean—I guess that’s why this image is one of my favorites—it was completely unexpected!
There’s not much to say about Katie and Adam that these images can’t convey—They are an amazing couple who were truly a match made in heaven. Katie lights up around Adam and Adam is so sweet and sensitive to Katie. I really had a great time at this wedding just watching the two of them interact and just “be” together. They are clearly two independent people but when together, seem so complete. Is that too simple and cliche of a desciption?? None the less, I hope I was able to capture (because that is what I do) their true love in the emotions of the ceremony and in the celebration of their union (which was a night full of great partying and dancing)!
I think this might be my favorite image from the day…. so much emotion that is about to spill over out of Katie. She’s really trying to hold it back!
I love this image too—-everybody is so ecstatic!
I’m officially done with this old blog—and have a new too cool for school, custom blog by Treble Red Media. LInk here and contine down this path with me…. https://www.julieharrisphotography.com/blog

It’s only appropriate for me to kick off my new blog in this manner…. in a way where I feel like I’m completely exposed and vulnerable–showing not necessarily my most beautiful work, but the work that I’m most connected to right now.
It’s been an interesting journey for me—both as an artist, and as what I’d like to call a “new adult”. I can’t complain about my childhood at all. It was quite perfect, actually–at least when you compare it to a lot of other upbringings. What I’ve come to realize in the last year in particular, however is that I never appreciated growing up with what I had. I was blessed with parents who never showed me anything but love and support and as a married adult of 30, I’ve started to look at my parents and siblings in completley different light (I’m the oldest of 4). I’m starting to see my parents and siblings as comrades and people that I’m connected to on a deeper level. Those whom I share a history with. It’s been a year of discovery, appreciation and a year of longing to know more about these people in my life. I’m interested in their struggles, their dreams and their hearts. It’s beautiful and heartbreaking all at once.
Last week I made the decision to cancel all my shoots and go out to my family’s farm in Eastern Colorado for Harvest. It’s been close to 15 years since all of us were together— and 15 years since I was there. We grow wheat and some millet, and that’s about all I know. I’ve been a “city slicker” my whole life, but some of my very best and sweetest memories are of arrowhead hunting with my dad and walking the land out by our farm or waking up to the smell of my Grandma’s bacon and coffee early in the mornings. It’s like a dream, actually, and I’m nostalgic for these days.
So that’s what I wanted to capture in these images— a sense of loss, appreciation, nostalgia, love and of course an undying desire to know my family and our history.
These two images are of our quonset. The image above is of my brother, Robbie who is reading the instructions on how to put together a pressure washer—the one below is of the beautiful chaos of many unfinished projects that the quonset hosts. When I showed this image to my grandma, Nonie, she said that Papa, my grandpa would roll over in his grave. That made me smile. He should see my car!
And this is my other brother, Robbie. He is 25 and is my kindred spirit—always looking for adventure and a good time.
We employ a harvesting crew to come out to harvest our wheat every summer. We’ve been using Frederick Harvesting crew for the last 20 years. This is a photo of Zane, one of the boss’s sons giving me a ride in the combine.
These are a couple other guys from the crew—One of them came all the way from ireland to work.
This is my family (minus my dad). In order from left to right: Mark, Amy, my mom, and my brother Robbie.
This is maybe my favorite image from this series. I did not tell my dad to pose like this—-this shot is pure “John Harris”. I’m blowing it up for my studio. I love it!
I had always wanted to do this!!! Eric contacted me about 2 months ago to see if I would be interested in photographing his proposal to Elissa. Ummmm…. duh! I can’t think of anything I would rather photograph. The emotional element to a shoot like this is a once in a lifetime thing—for them too! Hee hee. But really, I cried more than Elissa! And I think I might have been more nervous than Eric. What if I opened my big mouth and blew the surprise, or sneezed and missed the moment, or what if I couldn’t focus my camera, or worse—what if she said no? Of course she said Yes. And from the moment he “popped the question”, Elissa was ecstatic. Her eyes stayed wide and her mouth was curled up for at least an hour! It was one of my favorite shoots of the year.
And I have to give Eric major props… It’s only once that a girl gets proposed to—and if she is proposed to more than once, she is only proposed to for the first time, once in her life. You catch my drift—it’s a big moment in a girl’s life! And Eric was so thoughtful. He planned everything out so perfectly. It showed how important the proposal was to him as well. Even the ring was perfect.
So, without further ado, I’ll let you check out the pics. These images need no commentary. They say more than a thousand words.
If you know my style at all, than you probably know that “trashing the dress” isn’t really my thing. I focus on capturing emotion and genuine moments rather than trying to turn something that is a sacred and momentous into something that should be an advertisement for perfume. That being said, when on the actual day of their wedding, a bride and groom should be super stars and really know how to glam it up, while still authentically living out their wedding day in love, I’m tickled pink! That’s an alignment of many perfect stars! In that world, you have both the emotion of the day, the glamor of everything a bride should be, and the love for a “good time”. This sums up Andrea and Duane’s wedding…. Andrea is a gorgeous rock star who would be any photographers dream with her ability to be herself in front of the camera. And Duane’s total adoration and awe at Andrea’s beauty, is a thing I run across less that I’d like to. These two love each and also have a undying passion for art and beauty. This post–which may look like a “trash the dress”, was nothing of the sort, but was simply the way Andrea and Duane chose to celebrate part of their day—at Lime in Larimer square and all around the parts.
….And did I mention that Andrea is a photographer? Her wedding photographer was a very important decision for her, I feel very honored to have been the one chosen to capture this day.
This shot is purely PJ. Andrea took a horse and carriage over to Lime where they held the celebrations of the day. I got this shot as she was getting into the carriage. Isn’t she fabulous?!
Priceless expression from Duane, as Andrea rounded the corner and started descending the stairs…
Check it out, y’all…. Andrea gave me the honorary Nikon table! I was quite flattered, and my camera appreciated the shout out to Nikon.
I really hope Andrea puts this image on her website! I love it when the bride is also “the photographer”.
…and of course the day wasn’t just glamor—there was plenty of tenderness too. I could never tire of these kind of shots.

Meet the Nekritz family—Ed, Wendy, Jessica and Matthew. What a bunch of strong personalities! There would be no “faking” it from them, which was quite refreshing, actually. I walked away from the shoot feeling like I had actually captured their true spirits—especially the kids. All I had to do to get some shots from Jessica, was to ask her to recite Shakespeare (she’s quite the actress). I think she completely forgot that she was getting her photo taken, and went right into character. As for Matthew, I knew from the moment that I saw him, that he is a fun loving, silly little guy. I simply had Wendy stand behind me while I was taking his photo, and crack a few jokes to get these smiles. Although I have to say, my very favorite shot of the day is of Matthew dead on and stoic. His eyes are amazing….

Chelsy and Phil tied the knot last Saturday at the Chateaux at Fox meadows. It was a hot, summer solstice ceremony with all the bells and whistles. Chelsy hired me to do this wedding back in 2006 so I’ve gotten to know these two a bit. Chelsy hates PDA–Public displays of affection, so it was quite humorous taking their engagement photos, and their wedding day couple photos! What do you do? Phil, on the other hand took things into his own hands and got some canoodling out of her! It was a riot—but they look like they’re having fun, and very much in love in all these shots, don’t they? And they clearly had a blast at their recception.
Congratulations, you two! You won’t have to kiss in front of me until your maternity photos! Hee hee!
Chelsy has the most gorgeous blue eyes—they are luminous and glow from across a room—she is also blessed with amazing lashes. She told me that she can’t curl her eyelashes, or she’ll get mascara in her eyebrows…. ahhhh poor girl!
Phil is a man in love. Look at the expression on his face when he first saw Chelsy step out of the manor—priceless!
The Chateaux at Fox meadows doesn’t have a lot of “nature” around it, so outdoor shots can be hard. There is a fountain out front and a couple in the back, but for the most part, the place is surrounded by subdivisions and a parking lot. I actually kind of liked this—not sure why! But I love this shot, with the homes in the background—it just feel so honest and journalistic.
I think this shot is sexy.
Chelsy loved her flowers… they were one of the most important things to her about the day.

I don’t advertise myself as a “senior portrait” photographer—-it’s just not my thing. I don’t really care for straightening necklaces and making sure that my subject is perfectly poised in front of some flowers or hugging a tree. But every now and then, I’ll get an inquiry for someone who thinks outside the box and wants me to do their senior portrait–knowing full well that I may break all the “guidelines for the yearbook”. If all seniors were like Alec, I’d be making half my living doing this—he was so great to work with–a little shy at first, but working it like a champ by the end of the shoot. I told him he should do some modeling…
I had to throw in a photo of Alec and his sister—I loved that they didn’t take the shot too seriously… It fit both of their personalities
