During these slower wedding months, I’ve been going through a lot of my work from last summer’s season and really critiquing it—I’m finding the shots that I love, trying to eliminate the cliches, and honing in on my skills technically. What I’m finding, is that I’m really loving harsh light situations. Two years ago, I would have steered clear of anything that might have cast a harsh shadow on a face, or would choose to shoot with the sun always behind me, instead of shooting into it. But looking at some of my strongest images, I’m realizing that this harsh light is what I’m drawn to in some of my better images. I’m seeing that it can actually create more drama in the image, making it that much more emotional.

At Brooke and Jason’s wedding on Saturday, I really tried to step out of the “safe box” and shoot into situations that were a bit riskier light-wise. I wanted to showcase just how emotional this particular wedding was. Maybe it was because Brooke’s 5 year old daughter was just as much of a part of the day as Brooke and Jason, or maybe it was the way that Brooke and Jason could look at each other and say so many things using no words at all, or maybe it was the friends and family who gathered in love for the couple, but it was a simply perfect, moving wedding.

Brooke’s daughter, Mackenzie was pretty much thinking this was her day—-heck, it was her day! Brooke even let Mackenzie choose the flower girls, instead of Brooke doing it. I love that Mckinsey shared her big day with her two best girlfriends. This is an image of Kinsey’s friends watching her “being crowned”.

….it was a long day for Mackenzie, none the less.

Jason said vows not only to Brooke, but to Mackenzie as well. So sweet….

This moment in particular really grabbed me, and I love the mood that the light creates.

The Brown Palace is such a rad place to shoot!

Textures….
January 29 | 2008

I’ve been experimenting with some of Jesh De Rox’s textures lately, and am having so much fun manipulating some of my images….. I know this isn’t really my style, being a photojournalist and all, and God knows I would never hand color a single rose in a bouquet, but I think some of these textures are super cool! Perhaps I can sprinkle some into my weddings or portrait shoots. I think less is more. Thoughts anyone? Favorites?

I especially like some of these textures with my own personal work…. I snapped this really simple picture of the Hudson while I was out in NYC. It was a foggy day and I chose to keep the image out of focus. I love the warmth and content that the textures added to this image in particular.

I really think that these textures work best with close up faces or images with a lot of negative space. They shouldn’t take away from the emotion of the image, but draw you in a bit closer….

0oh la la! I think i just made this nude even edgier!

I love this image manipulated! It’s so dreamy–like she’s walking out of storybook….

a bit much, maybe??

I never thought you would be partaking in this fab!!!! Though I must say they do send you over the top in the edgy department. I think you should pull out the old grainy film more often for those rugged looking shots, its more you!!!!!

Nice effect. You might also achieve a "softer" or "country" effect by adding clouds, fabric, or both. Love your photos!

Thank goodness that it’s winter and I have plenty of space on my blog—-I just couldn’t narrow down these images! There were so many great moments–and Julie and Peter are just so darn beautiful!

I was with Julie and Pete on Saturday for close to 10 hours after a 3 1/2 drive up I-70, but I don’t think time has ever flown by so fast…. I had a blast—and what a party! I stayed through the last song, which you’ll never guess what it was—”Pour Some Sugar on Me”! ( just an inside joke for those who read my blurbit’s on photographik)…

Julie and Pete, you make such a wonderful couple—you’re both so and sweet and gracious—and I love the way that you look at each other! I’m so excited for what your future holds—Have a wonderful honeymoon in Thailand!

Julie had her niece, Taylor as one of her 3 flowergirls—what an amazing little girl! I’m pretty sure she thought I was the devil by the end of the night for taking her picture, but I loved her strong little personality!

I love this shot of Katie and Morgan (the other two flowergirls) consoling Taylor after she fell off her chair… awwww

I grabbed this shot just moments before Julie walked down the aisle—-she was sharing how important her girlfriends are, and will remain to her—amen to that!

…is this not the cutest ring bearer ever??

I love this image—so quirky!

Champagne flowed at the reception and people gushed with great toasts—-some hilarious, and others quite moving…

JULIE! I LOVE these - the crazier part is that I've worked with a lot of these people back in the day back in Grand Lake - how lucky they were to have you!!! and yes, you're right, cutest ring bear ever! great catch - love the contrast of the ring pillow and the stuffed animal... rockstar you are!
